1964 Tenor Saxophone SELMER Mark VI, #114512

The surface of a saxophone plays a key role in its vibrational behavior and, consequently, in the development of its tone and overtones. The primary purpose of the finish is, of course, to protect the saxophone’s material (usually brass of varying compositions) from corrosion and, naturally, to enhance its appearance. For the most part, saxophones are lacquered at Henri SELMER Paris, but they are also silver-plated, gold-plated, or—these days—matt-finished or patinated.
Of course, the type of lacquer used is very important. SELMER has always placed great emphasis on how sound develops when different lacquers are used. To this day, SELMER continues to experiment with modified lacquers. Consequently, during the “Mark VI period,” different lacquers were used depending on the year of manufacture and the location where the instrument was lacquered (for example, SELMER London or SELMER USA used a different lacquer than the main factory in Mantes-la-Ville, France).

I’m writing this because this beautiful 1964 SELMER Mark VI tenor saxophone is still in wonderful “varnish” condition. This original varnish shimmers beautifully and is still largely intact. There is wear on the rim of the bell and on the side of the knee, as well as scratch marks on the inside of the body from playing in a sideways position. The saxophone has clearly been played—it’s really well-played in!

Fully refurbished with metal resonators and no rivets, it really brings out its overtones beautifully. Its core is nicely focused, and its consistency across the entire spectrum makes it very easy to control. Technically, it’s in perfect condition—all the pads are like new since it was recently fully refurbished.
