Some time ago, we offered this—at first glance unremarkable—SELMER Mark VI in our new “Raw Classics” category in its original, unrestored condition. When one of our customers played it while testing various Mark VI models, we were delighted to discover the potential this horn held and decided on the spot to give this SELMER Mark VI tenor a thorough overhaul. (The photos were taken before the overhaul. Updated photos will follow.)
Now it’s finished and it plays fantastically! The overhaul was a good investment, because now, with the right partner, it can reach its full potential! And that’s a lot of potential: a beautifully centered core tone and the typical Mark VI character, with a fine overtone structure all around, and a lovely warmth overall—which, taken together, results in a tone spectrum full of character that you don’t find very often.
Certainly, the rust-free, convex resonators without rivets enhance the beautiful tonal character of this Mark VI, but the real reasons are different: 1. it is a truly excellent SELMER Mark VI, and 2. it has been played extensively, most likely professionally for decades, which is easily visible because much of the original silver plating has already worn away significantly. We have deliberately left this patina as is and have not re-silvered it.
Because just as it is, it is one of our best!
