The Best of Both Worlds: Why the SBA is So Coveted

The SELMER SBA represents the evolution of a legend. While the tone holes for the right and left hands were still positioned in a single line on the SELMER Balanced Action, the SELMER Super Action was the world’s first saxophone to feature offset tone holes. This innovation had an immense positive impact on the player’s posture! Today, offset tone holes are the industry standard for every saxophone.

Further innovations that have since become standard for all saxophone manufacturers include the Baritone saxophone with low A and Tenor and Alto saxophones with a high F# key.

• The Sound: Resonant, dark, and “singing.” It is more centered than the sound of the Balanced Action – offering slightly less projection, but in return, providing more definition in the core of the tone.
• Exclusivity: Since it was only in production for about seven years (serial numbers approximately 35,xxx to 55,xxx), it is much rarer to find than a Mark VI.
• The Choice of Legends: Icons such as Paul Desmond (Dave Brubeck Quartet) and the young John Coltrane relied on the SELMER SBA to define their sound.
